What if you are feeling suicidal? What should you know about both short-term emergency detention and long-term commitment? The short answer is that you can be committed to a mental hospital against your will if you meet the criteria set forth by the state in which you live.?? That said, the exact criteria can vary, but often includes the requirement that you must present a danger, either to yourself or others, before you can be committed.?? General, Short-Term Commitments Although the exact process for commitment varies from state to state, each state has procedures in place that prevent you from being detained without just cause, such as requirements for medical certification or judicial approval.?? There are also time limits on how long you can be held against your will. Who can initiate the process of having you committed also varies from state to state and depends on the type of commitment being sought. Its important to note that there is also a significant difference between emergency detentionâ"committing a person for a short period of timeâ"and longer periods of commitment. Can You Be Committed If You Are Suicidal? Suicidal thoughts and feelings along with the belief that you are in immediate danger of hurting yourself would fall under the umbrella of reasons for a short-term commitment or involuntary hospitalization for depression. Other criteria that may be considered include whether you are able to take care of yourself and whether you are in need of treatment for your mental illness. Some states do not require that a person be in danger of hurting themselves or others, and involuntary hospitalization may be considered if a person is refusing needed treatment for mental illness. The definition of mental illness also varies from state to state. How to Create a Suicide Safety Plan Who Can Make the Request? A short-term emergency detention, such as detention immediately following a suicide attempt, can generally be requested by anyone who has witnessed the situation that you are in, including friends, family, or the police. Even though almost anyone can initiate the process, most states do require either medical evaluation or court approval in order to ensure that you meet that particular states criteria.?? The allowed duration of emergency detentions vary from state to state but are most often limited to 24â"48 hours before a civil commitment proceeding must be initiated.?? Though some states have longer detention periods that can range from four to 10 days.?? Can Someone Who Has Been Committed Refuse Treatment? Even if a person has been committed through emergency detention, they will not be forced to undergo treatment for their mental illness, with the exception of treatments required on an emergency basis designed to calm them or stabilize a medical condition. This does not include medications to specifically treat the mental illness (such as administering antidepressants). In order to make a person take medications for mental illness or go through therapy, that person would need to be declared incompetent to make their own decisionsâ"a separate process from that of short-term commitment.?? Do You Have the Right to Refuse Medical Treatment? Longer-Term Commitments Commitments for longer periods of time generally have more stringent requirements than emergency detention, but again are for limited periods of time and cannot be extended without the proper procedures being followed. Typically, the maximum length of long-term commitment is six months depending on the state, after which a reassessment must be made before the commitment is extended.?? To learn more about your own states laws regarding involuntary commitment, consult the Treatment Advocacy Center, which provides a state-by-state review of all relevant laws.?? Hospitalization for Depression When talking about commitment, it might sound like a prison sentence, but in actuality, when commitment is considered, the goal is to help a person, not to punish or restrict their rights as a human being. Talk of commitment usually demonstrates compassion and consideration of the safety and well-being of the person in need of help. Certainly, this is not always the case, and this is where the involvement of a medical professional or judicial approval is important.?? Severe depression is, unfortunately, far too common. And for some, being hospitalized for depression may be the best step in getting help before you make any decisions you could later regret. While in the hospital, a person who is depressed will have the opportunity to meet with a psychiatrist or psychologist, a social worker, and participate in individual and/or group therapy. It is likely that these treatments are behind the finding that emergency detention for people with severe mental illness is associated with a lower mortality rate (fewer deaths) and an improvement in the quality of life for those who are committed. A Word From Verywell For the most part, anyoneâ"from family members and friends to police and emergency respondersâ"can recommend short-term emergency detention (commitment) for a person who is in danger of hurting themself or others, as in the case of being suicidal. The exact requirements, however, vary from state to state, as does the amount of time a person may be committed. While emergency commitment can sound very frightening, the goal is to allow a person who is not coping well with mental illness to get the help needed to get past the crisis at hand. If you or a loved one are experiencing thoughts of suicide, seek help and make safety and prevention a priority. How to Help a Friend Who Is Feeling Suicidal

How to Say Sorry and Apologize in Japanese
The Japanese typically apologize far more frequently than Westerners. This probably results from cultural differences between them. Westerners seem reluctant to admit their own failure. Since apologizing means that admitting ones own failure or guilt, it may not be the best thing to do if the problem is to be resolved in a court of law. A Virtue in Japan Apologizing is considered a virtue in Japan. Apologies show that a person takes responsibility and avoids blaming others. When one apologizes and shows ones remorse, the Japanese are more willing to forgive. There are much fewer court cases in Japan compared to the States. When apologizing the Japanese often bow. The more you feel sorry, the more deeply you bow. Expressions Used to Apologize Sumimasen. ã â¢Ã£ ¿Ã£ ¾Ã£ âºÃ£ââ It is probably the most common phrase used to apologize. Merchant Of Venice Essays (564 words) - Literature,
Merchant Of Venice In this play two characters have a bigger role than one might imagine. Salerio and Solanio are the storytellers in The Merchant of Venice. They fill in important information that the audience needs to full understand the play. First, the two names differ by only a few letters, they are so close that one might confuse the two and think that they are the same person. I feel that this is Shakespeare's intention in this play. He makes the two similar so that they are not very important to the plot of the play. At the same time they are two different people, not just a narrator. I feel that Shakespeare does this so that he can have the two characters speaking to each other. It is through their, Salerio and Solanio, interactions that the audience learns important information to the plot of the play. At the opening of the play three characters are on stage, Antonio, Salerio, and Solanio. Through the dialogue, Salerio informs the audience of Antonio's ships: "Your mind is tossing on the ocean/There where your argosies [ i.e., great merchant ships] with portly [i.e., stately] sail (I.i. 8-9). While in the same scene Solanio helps the audience establish that Antonio has no major love interest: "Why then you are in love," to which Antonio replies, "Fie, fie!" (I.i. 46-47). Through their conversations, the two have given the audience a basis for the play: that Antonio is a merchant and that he is not concerned about being in love. An entire scene (viii) in Act II is given completely to a conversation between Solanio and Salerio. Here they tell of many events that have happened: Bassanio's ship setting off and Gratiano going with him; Shylock's reaction to Jessica and his ducats being gone; a Venetian ship that is wrecked in the English Channel; and also the parting between Antonio and Bassanio. Here, through the conversation of Solanio and Salerio the audience is told what has happened. Thus they have only one way to obtain the information. They all have the same thoughts about what has happened since they did not see the scenes and were only told about them. Solanio and Salerio are the storytellers in the play but they are only used for about two thirds of the play. The scene that either one of them is in is scene ii of Act III. Here only one of the two is present. Salerio's occupation for the scene is to get the plot of the play back to Antonio. Since the action of the play has mostly been involving Bassanio and Portia, Salerio arrives to tell Bassanio of the trouble Antonio is in back in Venice: "Not sick, my lord, unless it be in mind/Nor well, unless in mind. His [i.e., Antonio's] letter there/Will show you his estate [i.e., condition]" (III.ii. 234-236). From this scene on Solanio and Salerio are never to be seen in the play again. I feel that this is because their job as storytellers is complete. There is only the court scene and the final scene left in the play. Those two scenes tell their own story with no breaks in the action. There is no use for the two storyteller characters because everything else is acted out. These two characters have a vital role in the play. When there is information that has to be told it is there job. They keep the action of the play going without the audience having to watch a lot of scenes.

Triad of the Greek Thinkers essays
Triad of the Greek Thinkers essays An unexpected cause happened after the Persian Wars: the Greek flood of new ideas. When the war ended, religious beliefs declined and caused more people to ignore the traditional explanations of the world of nature. The Greeks were dissatisfied with supernatural and mythical explanations of reality and began questioning their destiny. This is when philosophy arose. The Greek philosophy may not only of effected us directly, but the Greeks paved the way to modern development. They gave us knowledge from the field of math through Pythagoras and his theorem on the right triangle, and science through Aristotles study of biology, and Democritus study of atoms. However some philosophies may seem incapable, but Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates changed the way people think. These three Greek philosophers questioned the most basic and widely accepted ideas based on virtue and moral excellence. The first of the Hellenic philosophers was Socrates, the revolutionary thinker. Although Socrates opposed everything the Sophists stood for, he shared the rejection of philosophizing about nature, focus on human problems, and desire to empower individuals to make their own moral choices. As curious as he was, Socrates was always questioning what things are and searching for definitions. He would ask people such questions as what is friendship?, what is justice?. By asking these questions people became annoyed, but Socrates was not just looking for the definition but also the essence to understand the knowledge of the world (History P39). Socrates core of ethics was virtue. Its the deepest and most basic propensity of man. And virtue is knowledge (History P40). A famous statement of Socrates was a bad man is a bad man through ignorance (History P40). This means a person who knows the truth will not commit evil deeds and those who do wrong, do so out of ignorance. ...

Picking Your Perfect Title
Picking Your Perfect Title Picking Your Perfect Title Picking Your Perfect Title By Daniel Scocco Picking a title can often be the hardest part of a writing project. Sometimes the title just comes to you, but more often than not, you have to put quite a bit of work into finding just the right one. You may even have to sift through several titles before you find one that sits well with you. Here are a few suggestions to try: 1. Mad Libs Think of a couple adjectives, nouns and verbs that describe your story. Write them all down on a sheet of paper and combine them into different phrases. Sometimes you can pick up on a title that works. 2. Pick a Part Look for an important turning point in your novel or just focus on the climax. Describe this event on paper. Pick out the words or phrases that stand out to you in your description. Mix and match these words to see what works for you. 3. Live by Example Pick out novels or short stories that run in the same genre as your project. Study the titles and how they relate to the story as a whole. Then, look at your project as a whole. Think of the theme or overall message of your book. Write down some words that go along with your theme and work them to see if you can find a fitting title. 4. Go for the Obscure Avoid the obvious ââ¬Å"Theâ⬠titles like ââ¬Å"The Pink Slipperâ⬠or ââ¬Å"The Brown Dog.â⬠Look for slight recurring themes or undercurrents in your novel and try naming your novel after those subtle nuances. JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, is a genius with titles. The titles, especially the Half-Blood Prince, all highlight under-riding themes that later play a large role in the series as a whole. 5. Appeal to the Higher Poets usually have a way of weaving words in a beautiful tapestry of art that put prose writers to shame. Read some famous poetry and write down words and phrases that stick out to you. Song lyrics often have the same effect. You can find some powerful titles by mixing, matching and combining words from powerful lyrics. 6. A Writerââ¬â¢s Best Friend Consult your thesaurus and look up synonyms for commonly occurring words in your novel. Write down as many synonyms as you can to try and get a fresh point of view on an event in your novel. Look up these synonyms in the dictionary to get a better understanding of their meaning. Use different words in context to find a combination that you like. 7. Super Easy Way Type ââ¬Å"title generatorâ⬠into Google and see what pops up. There are several websites that will either have you type in a couple descriptive words and scramble them for you or theyââ¬â¢ll just generate some random titles for a variety of genres. Some, like guywiththecoat.com, just generate extremely random and funny titles. Mostly, these titles are just good for a laugh, like ââ¬Å"Pants ride the Bus,â⬠but you may actually be able to find something that works with your project. I hope these suggestions make the arduous process of title-finding a little easier. Good luck! Want to improve your English in five minutes a day?
